The shared reading charity for the Forces community gives free special resources (scrapbooks, teen journals, adult reading and wellbeing journals) and books to families with children up to age 18. Whether a family is at home together or apart because of deployment, training, or geographical distance, reading the same book, chatting about it, and making a scrapbook or filling a journal is a fun way to stay connected, support well-being, and can help improve communication.

Families can do Reading Force in any way that suits them – for example, with a grandparent, with siblings, with a loved one deployed or living far away. Any family combination that appeals! Chatting about the books can take place in person, over FaceTime, in emails – whatever works!

“Me and my mum read the book together every night. My Daddy was away so I FaceTimed him and told him about what I read. We loved talking to each other and laughing about our favourite parts in the book.”

Reading Force is free for ALL Forces families, including serving, veterans, ex-forces through divorce/separation or those who have been bereaved, in the UK and based overseas (with a BFPO address). It’s easy to take part – simply go to www.readingforce.org.uk and request resources and books.

Have you ever thought of running a book club for kids or adults in your military community?

Thanks to a grant from the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust, Reading Force is supporting book clubs to get up and running and are providing free copies of books for participants.

Are you interested in running a club with our support?

Reading Force is looking for coordinators to run book clubs. They can be for children, teens or adults with a military connection – serving, reservist, veterans and family members. The book clubs can be face to face in your local community or online.

Possible coordinators could be Welfare Officers, Community Development Officers, Choir Leaders, Military Kids Club Leaders, Service Children’s Champions, and more.

We are suggesting the following age ranges:

  • Junior (aged approximately 8-11)

  • Senior (aged approximately 12-18)

  • Adult

Approximately 10 to 15 members per club, meeting once per month.
